Through letting go of what has become obsolete we can focus on what is essential, concentrate our energies and make room for the new. To allow things to happen. To let go. All of that is <em>Gen<\/em>. To feel oneself. Just take a moment to truly feel. To sense. To actually perceive the situation. To perceive everything. And then: Rethink things. Completely anew. Come up with a completely new solution with&hellip; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/beginners-mind\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Shoshin or &quot;beginner's mind&quot; is a concept from Zen Buddhism and refers to an attitude of openness, enthusiasm, and lack of preconceptions, similar to that of a beginner. The practice of Shoshin serves as a counter to the hubris and closed-mindedness often associated with considering oneself an expert. Shoshin also acts as an antidote to&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">beginner&rsquo;s mind<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually, we go through our daily routines without much thought. <em>We wake up, brush our teeth, get dressed. Breakfast and off to work<\/em>. We neither notice the toothbrush nor the breakfast sandwich, and we only truly wake up when we are sitting at our desks reading emails. At some point, we developed this routine, it worked, and since then, we have been going through the motions. If something unexpected happens, an exceptional situation, we might notice what we are doing. Because something does not work. And then, we might begin to examine elements of our routine and question whether the standard solution is still effective. Because perhaps the problem to be solved has changed in the meantime. Or the problem is the same, but there are now better possibilities&hellip;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The <em>Einstellung Effect<\/em>: Negative Consequence of Mechanized Thinking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Einstellung effect<\/em>, a phenomenon in which the mind operates in a mechanized state, automatically appl<a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/yin\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Yin originally referred to the colder north side of a mountain, the shaded river bank or the darker, cooler south side of a valley. Later on Yin was associated with the idea of days with cool weather and overcast skies, with shadows and all that is dark, cool and humid, with water and earth, night&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">yin<\/a>g a previously developed standard solution without thoroughly examining the current problem, has been recognized in scientific circles (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Einstellung_effect\">Wikipedia<\/a>). It is considered a negative consequence of past experiences in problem-solving. The fact that a solution was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/success\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Central notion of the traditional interpretation of the I Ching. Meaning: fertilization, things that simply land at one's lap without voluntary accomplishment; the receptive, feminine principle, Kun. Also represented as clouds.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">success<\/a>ful in the past tempts individuals to apply that solution again and again. This obscures the view of the problem itself, the problem in the here and now, the new problem that often only superficially resembles the old one. Consequently, the standard solution fails to truly address the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, we have the opportunity to assess the effectiveness of our problem-solving routines on any given day, even in the absence of exceptional circumstances. However, fate sometimes graciously presents us with these extraordinary situations. It is during such moments that we embark on a process of decluttering and discarding waste. Not only in the material realm, but also shedding useless emotions, thoughts&hellip; And, of course, standard answers and standard solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeing the World Anew with a Beginner&rsquo;s Mind<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, this process leads us to a state of complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/emptiness-of-things\" target=\"_self\" title=\"&#346;&#363;nyat&#257;, the Buddhist teaching of the emptiness of things. Read more: https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C5%9A%C5%ABnyat%C4%81\" class=\"encyclopedia\">emptiness<\/a>. And suddenly we rediscover something profound: the beginner&rsquo;s mind. Known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/shoshin\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Shoshin or &quot;beginner's mind&quot; is a concept from Zen Buddhism and refers to an attitude of openness, enthusiasm, and lack of preconceptions, similar to that of a beginner. Shoshin also acts as an antidote to&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Shoshin<\/a> in Zen Buddhism, it embodies an attitude of being a beginner: open, enthusiastic, without prejudice or preconceived notions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gen<\/em> is associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/functional-circuit\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Meridian, pathway or channel through which, according to Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the life energy (Qi) flows. There are twelve main channels, each of which is assigned to one organ system. On the meridians themselves, there are special points where - e.g. through needles (acupuncture) or finger pressure (acupressure) - the energy balance can be&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">functional circuit<\/a>s of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/large-intestine\" target=\"_self\" title=\"In no2DO&nbsp; trigram Gen, the mountain, is associated with the functional circuit large intestine (LI). The elimination of waste - not only in the material realm, but also emotions, thoughts, relationships, etc. - is its subject. Everything that has become worthless for us has to be excreted, because only when the unusable parts compost back&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Large Intestine (LI)<\/a> in the classics of Traditional Chinese Medicine (see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/king-wens-later-heaven\" target=\"_self\" title='\"King Wen Later Heaven\" is one of the many ways how to attribute trigrams to phenomena of nature, the seasons, character traits, family relations, geographical directions etc. Read more: https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bagua#King_Wen_%22Later_Heaven%22 However, this system is not fully compatible with the five elements theory, because King Wen&rsquo;s Later Heaven only considers the classical four seasons, and ignores&hellip;' class=\"encyclopedia\">King Wen&rsquo;s Later Heaven<\/a><\/em>). In a model, complex relationships are simplified and reduced to their essential aspects. This allows aspects of reality to be grasped and understood more clearly than in the actual reality. Models are an important tool for understanding complex relationships. With a model, for example,&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">model<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/archives\/6322\">Following the Path of the Dao<\/a>, <em>Gen<\/em> belongs to the dynamic <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/landmark-point\" target=\"_self\" title=\"The model Follow the Path of Dao distinguishes individual trigrams according to their qualitative dynamics. At the landmark points (Zhen, the thunder, Gen, the mountain, Sun, the wind \/ tree, Dui, the lake), the movement is dynamic, the direction is clear, and the momentum increases in terms of a positive disturbance. At the landmark points&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">landmark point<\/a>s<\/em>. In <em>Gen<\/em>, the dynamics arise from a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/yang\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Yang was initially symbolized by the warmer, southern side of the mountain, a sunny bank, later the mountain as a whole. Subsequently Yang represented everything including light and bright day, summer and sun. Also dryness, air (wind) and fire were assigned to Yang, as well as increasingly warm days of spring, the warmer season's flourishing&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Yang<\/a> line following receptive Yin (two Yin lines in <em>Zhen<\/em> or three Yin lines in <em>Kun<\/em>): a positive vibration that generates momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questions for self-exploration may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do I feel when I allow myself to become still? How do I feel?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And as I expand the radius of my attention now, expanding it further around me: What is there? What do I perceive?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And if I had the eyes of a beginner? Or if I were to look through the eyes of a stranger? What would this stranger see when looking at my familiar life?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would he\/she say about it? Say to me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And what do the things, my belongings, tell me when I listen to them? What do they reveal to me? They are composed of three solid (Yang) or broken (Yin) lines. Two trigrams form a hexagram, one image of I&nbsp;Ching. Any clear disengagement gives us tangible results: deep transformation and reorientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Gen<\/em> emerges from <em>Kun<\/em>, the Earth<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/kun-the-earth\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Modern Interpretation: Accepting that what is here and now; peace, stability, resting within oneself, feeling supported and maintained; to make good use of things; relationship and commitment; self-esteem; compassion The following image is often chosen to describe Kun: soil in which a seedling is growing. Soil is unstructured matter: in soil a seedling finds everything&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Kun, the earth<\/a><\/em>, stands for a thorough inventory. We may note things that are unnecessary ballast, which obstruct our efforts and deplete our energy. When <em>Gen<\/em> arises from <em>Kun<\/em>, we can&nbsp;confidently let go of the ballast and surrender ourselves to the force of earth&rsquo;s gravity. In doing so, we not only release our muscles and tendons but our entire being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples of hexagrams where<em>&nbsp;Gen<\/em> emerges from <em>Kun<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/archives\/tag\/kun-gen-en\">&rarr; here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Gen<\/em>&nbsp;emerges from <em>Zhen<\/em>, the Thunder<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the initial decision (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.no2do.com\/synopse\/en\/glossar\/zhen-the-thunder\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Modern Interpretation: Ability to make decisions; determination, enthusiasm, courage; precision; flexibility, strength Zhen represents our ability to make decisions, our determination, enthusiasm, courage, and precision; but also flexibility and strength belong to Zhen. If we look at nature, then Zhen&lsquo;s pattern of movement is that of a bud in its protective sleeve, just beginning to&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Zhen, the thunder<\/a><\/em>), letting go and dissolution (<em>Gen<\/em>) arise: the old is transformed. This transformation can occur abruptly, but often happens gradually and smoothly.
